North Platte man defying the odds

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nathaniel Farley is recovering much faster than doctors initially expected after a 2015 garage fire in North Platte. Farley suffered burns on over 96% of his body.

He was working on a motorcycle on South Chestnut Street with his dad, Brent, when a heater caught fire due to the gasoline vapors. Nathaniel's dad did not survive the fire.

Nathaniel's physical therapist says its rare Nathaniel survived because so much of his body was burned. But he's up and walking with the help of others at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.

Alison Mooney, Nathaniel's Physical Therapist says, "Nathaniel had 96% of his body burned, and he was just laying in bed through different surgeries. And that takes a whole toll on your system."

At the time of the accident, Nathaniel and Brent Farley were both taken to St. Elizabeth Regional Burn and Wound Center in Lincoln.

Nathaniel's determination is evident and would like to be a motivational speaker one day.
