Each year the organization asks people for their leftover Halloween candy to use as fillers for boxes.

While some donate loose candy from trick-or-treating, others buy discounted Halloween candy.

Operation Christmas Card Founder Char Swalberg said she never thought the organization would get big enough to prepare 500 packages.

"Absolutely not. I had no idea whatsoever," said Swalberg.

"Even having the board agree we would shoot for 500 care packages scares the life out of me."

Operation Christmas Card has raised approximately $2,000 and is needing $7,000 more in order to ship all 500 packages.
