Optimistic Christmas Trees
In the south parking lot of the Platte River Mall the North Platte Optimist Club is selling trees to raise money for the community.
"It all goes to a good cause. This is how we fund the fireworks we put on for the 4th of July," says North Platte Optimist Member Kevin Winder.
"We do a lot of other different things for the community. Stuff for kids. We take a DNA sample and all of the pertinent information so that if something should happen to the child then that could all be traced back."
Winder says one of best parts about the job is each year he gets to be a part of a family's tradition. He recalls a father and a son which he describes as six or seven years old.
He says the father allowed the son to pick the tree which excited the boy. Winder says it made for a special experience as they went through the process of finding the perfect Christmas tree.
The lot has many choices of pines, furs and spruces to choose from.
Starting at $20 the variety includes wreaths, blue spruces, Douglas firs, Fraser Firs, balsam firs, white pines and Scotch pines.
The hours are noon-8 p.m. daily until December 23, or until sold out.
