Update: 6/1/2020 5:11 p.m.:

Homes and businesses throughout the city were left in the dark Monday afternoon.

Officers with the North Platte Police Department helped direct traffic on Francis Street between Jeffers and Dewey Streets after stop lights stopped working.

Employees at gas stations, fast food restaurants, and banks had to turn away their customers due to the power outage.

Municipal Light and Water says a jumper that burnt off a switch on a transmission line and tripped a breaker at the North Platte Hydro caused the outage.

The power outage affected around three thousand customers and lasted an hour.

The City is experiencing a power outage in several areas of the city. There is no known cause or time frame for restoring power according to officials.

The North Platte Police Department is asking that the community not call in to report outages. Only call if there is an emergency.

This is a developing story.
