Statewide tornado drill canceled but leaders still want plans in place
Wednesday was supposed to the statewide tornado drill, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the drill has been cancelled.
Even though the drill could not take place as planned, Region 51 Emergency Management and the National Weather Service are still putting out information and tips as part of severe weather awareness week.
"It’s all because of the Covid concerns, schools aren't in session right now and we’re kind of limiting our staffing here, so it’s just better to kind of cancel it and we’ve been blasting social media with safety concerns," said Rachel Kulik, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in North Platte.
Even though the drill could not happen, Region 51 Emergency Management recommends having an emergency plan in place and to walk through what that plan looks like.
"Have your plan, know what you’re going to do no matter where you will, be even if it’s out at the softball field know where you would go in the event of a tornado or a thunderstorm and know where you would need to go no matter where you’re at for safety," said Joanna LeMoine
Deputy Director for Region 51 Emergency Management.
