Tree planting ceremony honors two mayors

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. KNOP Two men devoted to North Platte and their families are honored during a special ceremony Friday afternoon.

Former North Platte Mayor Carl Bieber and Ken Huebner were honored during an Arbor Day Tree Planting Dedication Ceremony at Memorial Park.

They were honored for their forward thinking views during a time when North Platte was the fourth largest city in the state.

Family members say the dedication plants the seed to ensure their memory lives on.

"It's been quite awhile since dad was mayor and I suppose many people don't even know him, but this was a real honor and a good memory in going forward," said Paul Huebner, son of Ken Huebner.

"Dad was city councilman for the east side of town and we used to cut through this park on our way to grade school when we were walking to school," said Karl Bieber, son of Carl Bieber. "So it's so neat to think that my kids and maybe even their kids can come to this park and look for the Cobblestone Oak of grandpa Carl."

A Prairie Expedition American elm was planted to memorialize Huebner

Bieber was Mayor from 1977 to 1980.

Huebner served two terms starting in 1965.
