Veterans were honored in advance to Memorial Day at Fort McPherson National Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.

A new plaque was revealed that honors the fallen and their families.

The Department of Veteran Affairs and the National Cemetery Administration partnered with Carry the Load relay teams to provide a way to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families.

It was at the same time the relay team arrived in Eastern Nebraska, that the cemetery dedicated the "Tribute to the Fallen and their Families" plaque.

"The whole idea with this is to reinforce Memorial Day. It is not just a one day holiday for the veteran community. We are trying to do something for the awareness of the community. You don't have to wait until Memorial Day to thank someone for their service or to visit a National Cemetery," said Fort McPherson National Cemetery Assistant Director Seven Weir-Santos.

A memorial service will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery on Monday at 2 p.m.
