Nebraska headed to NCAA Championship

Nebraska defeated Illinois 3-2 Thursday and advances to the National Championship in Minneapolis.

The first set was a close one, with neither team leading by more than three points. Trailing 20-18, Illinois finished the first set on a 7-2 run to claim a 25-22 win.

Illinois dominated in the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, en route to a 25-16 win.

Nebraska hit .298 as a team, with 18 kills and just four errors on 47 swings, to claim a 25-23 win in the third set.

Nebraska forced a fifth and deciding set with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

In the deciding set, Nebraska hit .375 (11k-2e-24a), while Illinois hit .333 (8k-0e-24a). Mikaela Foecke led the Cornhuskers with four kills and three digs, while Lexi Sun had three kills and two digs.

Nebraska will play Stanford in the NCAA Championship Saturday at 8 p.m. Stanford sweept BYU on Thursday.

"That was probably the most exciting game I’ve ever been in. It was a little rough at the start, but I think our team was really resilient and we fought really hard and I think that is why we are here right now, “ Freshman Setter Nicklin Hames said.

“Yeah that was insane. I knew we were capable of it from the very beginning. It just took us a while to get going,” Sophomore Middle Blocker Lauren Stivrins said. “I think we came out a little too anxious and excited. As I said, we just left all the bad juju in the locker room and came out there a whole different team."
