Angelo Altavilla went 2-for-4 and drove in 3 runs to help Nebraska win its opening-round game at the Big Ten Tournament, 8-2 over Minnesota. Altavilla had a 2-RBI triple in the first inning, which sparked a strong offensive night for the Huskers (29-20). Joe Acker, Gunner Helstrom and Spencer Schwellenbach also had run-scoring hits for Nebraska. Schwellenbach delivered a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning, which blew the game open.
On the mound, senior right-hander Matt Waldron struck out 9 batters while surrendering just 2 runs. Waldron was in control from the beginning. He fanned the side in the first inning.
With the win, Nebraska advances to play Iowa on Thursday. The game starts at 9:00 p.m. and will be televised on BTN. Iowa defeated top-seeded Indiana on Wednesday.
