NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Flatrock Roller Derby, North Platte's roller derby team, will be hosting its only home match of the season on Saturday at the D&N Event Center.
The team will face off against Project Mayhem, out of Denver, Colo. The two teams faced off earlier in the season in Denver, Project Mayhem came away with the win in that match.
"They are a great team, they're built pretty big, pretty stout, they've got some fast jammers," said Shayla Hecht, the team's president.
Flatrock Roller Derby, has had success at home thanks to the crowds at their games.
"The ambiance is so electric in the D&N Event Center, everybody's cheering. It doesn't matter if you know what's going on, or not going on. It's just electric, there's a camaraderie, everybody's super nice, it's just a lot of fun," said Kristin Johnson, a blocker and jammer on the team.
The roller derby team wants people to come out to the match even if they do not know anything about the sport.
"Roller derby is all about family, empowering women, so this year it's really about getting out into the community, letting people know that there is roller derby here in North Platte," Hecht said.
While roller derby is a physical sport, off the track, opposing skaters still get along well.
"We're all talking, we're all laughing and joking, it's like a sisterhood off the track. But on the track we're all serious, we're all doing what we need to do to win," Johnson said.
The team likes to give back, and typically chooses causes to donate a part of their proceeds to. For this game, the team has chosen Kids Klub.
"Most of our team, they're moms. They work, we have nurses, teachers, sales associated, stay at home moms," Hecht said. "I want to show North Platte it's a lot of fun, and to bring out the family. Obviously, we bring our kids here to practice," she said gesturing to the group of children playing off to the side of the practice.
