SUTHERLAND, Neb. (KNOP)--- Will White brings leadership and dedication to the Sutherland wrestling program.
"We don't really have to say too much because he's so smart, and he's so knowledgeable and he has knowledge of the sport and every situation," said assistant coach Tyrell Wilson.
William White was a student manager for the Sutherland wrestling team in middle school, and has wrestled for the team since his freshman year. Since freshman year, he has improved thanks to his own drive to be the best he can be.
Assistant coach Wilson said, "This year, yeah, he's been the best he's ever been."
"He's actually watching videos, watching instructional videos, watching guys that are good... wrestle."
Senior 152 wrestler Will White said, "From my freshman year to now, I've just really expanded my knowledge of wrestling a lot. I'm not the strongest, most athletic kid that I've seen wrestle."
"I watch a lot of college wrestling, just on YouTube and stuff. It's just good to watch high level wrestlers and what you can learn from them," White said.
White has been to state the last three years, and each year had helped put him in the position he is in this season.
White said, "My freshman year, it was a good experience. Then, my sophomore year I was really looking for a state medal, and my junior year too, and I fell short both those years. This year could've been a year where you come back and you're like well I could've taken it easy I guess. It's hard to come back hungry every year, but I keep coming back hungrier."
White sits at 27-1 on the season, and has been able to pass his wisdom down to younger guys on the team, including his brother, who is a freshman this year.
"I tell him all the time, you're not going to wrestle that's going to beat on you the way I do, so, he learns a lot. I think they learn a lot from sixth grade to know, how far I've come as a freshman," said White. "Hopefully they can see themselves in my shoes in a few years."
White said, "It's definitely a good senior year, can't really ask for much better. I beat two number one rated kids so far. It shows a lot, because they're good kids, and everyone you wrestle at state is good kids. So, it's good to get those matches in now, because you'll know what to expect when you get down there."
