NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP)- The Mullen Broncos football team played in Memorial Stadium this morning for the chance to finish their undefeated season and be crowned class D2 state champions.
The Broncos got off to a hot start against fellow undefeated Johnson-Brock, scoring on their first drive, and then jumping out to a 20-0.
That lead would disappear before halftime, as Johnson-Brock scored 22 straight points, and would lead 22-20 at the half.
The second half was basically all Eagles, as they outscored the Broncos 34-6 to win the game 56-26, their first state title in school history.
After the game, head coach Mitch Pfeiffer talked about the tough loss.
"Well like I told the guys, it hurts, I mean I know it does, you know nobody wants to lose, you know end the season on a loss like that but remember all the good that happened this year. You know we had a lot of positives, a lot of good things that did happen this year," Pfeiffer said.
Pfeiffer also praised the Eagles for their play.
"Oh I think, you know obviously they're a very talented football team and they were just kind of on their heels to start with and we knew there was probably a good chance they were going to regroup and get things going again and we just needed to kind of maintain our intensity and didn't quite get it done," Pfeiffer said.
Mullen senior running back Lane Edis broke his father's rushing yards record in the first half of the game, he finished with 263 yards on the game.
