NPCC women advance, Thurman named coach of the year

The NPCC women's basketball team faced off against Central Community College in Columbus today for the Region IX Division II championship.

The Knights were victorious over the Raiders, 68-60.

“I could not be more proud of this team,” said coach Jeff Thurman. “We battled all night against a very good team. Our student-athletes showed a lot of heart tonight.”

The Knights trailed 46-40 after the third quarter, but outscored the Raiders 28-14 in the fourth.

“We could have folded in the third quarter being down 12 on the road,” Thurman said, “but this shows how much growth we’ve gone through in the last month or so.”

Madisyn Francis led all scorers with 21 points. Nahatabaa Nacona, Emily Joseph, and Katie Cox all added double digits points, scoring 17, 15, and 11, respectively. Nacona also led the Knights with 11 rebounds.

Francis, Nacona, and Joseph were named to the all-Region IX team.

In his first season as head coach, Jeff Thurman was named Region IX Coach of the Year.

Despite ending the regular season with a 5-22 record, the Knights have won both their post-season games.

They advance to a district playoff game. They official information for that game has not yet been announced, but it will likely be Saturday in North Platte.
