It was a shock for both fans and the Nebraska baseball team when Head Coach Darin Erstad announced his resignation Monday.
Pitcher Kyle Perry gets emotional talking about his coach Darin Erstad who announced his resignation Monday.
The team had just returned to Lincoln from the NCAA Tournament, when Erstad told his players they were going to have a team meeting in the club house. That's when he broke the news to his team.
Surprise, shock and heartbreak were emotions shared by the athletes. Many of them tearful when 10/11's Dan Corey spoke with them.
"He's great; I loved every second of being with him," said Alex Henwood, senior infielder. "He loves the game of baseball, the atmosphere here. I just can't say enough good things about him. I am sad to see him go, but he is doing it for the right reasons."
"I don't even know what to think right now," said Aaron Palensky, sophomore outfielder. "Coach Erstad was an incredible coach, and even better guy. When he told us there wasn't a dry eye in the room."
"It was a shock, it was very emotional," said Robbie Palkert, junior pitcher. "I've never seen 35-40 guys crying in a room like that."
"He wasn't just a coach for a lot of us; He was another parent," said Mojo Hagge, junior outfielder. "Whether that be in school, we go in and talk to him whenever we needed to."
