ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV/Gray News) - A 17-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly tried to strangle and repeatedly stab another student.

Authorities in York County said the fight reportedly broke out at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill on Sept. 28.

According to Rock Hill police, during the fight, the 17-year-old tried to strangle the other student with a charging cord and stabbed him in the neck with a pencil.

Police said the other student sustained a puncture wound, but they did not say how severe his injuries were.

Officers detained the 17-year-old and allegedly found he had a THC vape. While he was detained, Rock Hill police said the teen threatened the other student and said he wanted to harm himself.

Police said the 17-year-old also damaged school property and “attempted to access items” while in a police car.

The teen was taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and issued a juvenile summons for assault and battery, possession of marijuana and malicious injury to property.

The assault and battery charge was later upgraded to attempted murder, with investigators noting that the 17-year-old would be charged as an adult.
