The Canaday Station southeast of Lexington was put into service by Ralph Canaday in 1958 to help fill a void in the state's power supply.

Today, the plant is only operational during the first week of august and is kicks into action whenever the state finds itself in dire straights such as the ice storm in 2009 and the drought in 2012.

"It's100 megawatts of credited power that NPPD can use at anytime they need to and it is also a hedge that if something happens to one of the major units, let's say Gerald Gentleman Station, then you have Canaday to come back to pick up that 100 megawatts or whatever is lost," said Canaday Station Water Systems and Renewable Energy Manager Chuck Troia.

Troia says at one point, the plant was used as a Civil Defense Center.
